Make Time to Enjoy Life

Posted on June 30, 2023August 4, 2023 by M Miller

.

It is extremely important to make time to enjoy life.  If you are like most people, it has been a busy year.  For those of us who have families with children we have finished the school year. It is officially summer break.   There seems to be a never-ending hustle and bustle to the next activity or project.

Time Waits for No One to Enjoy Life

You may say but I don’t have the time to enjoy life or how can I enjoy life when there is so much happening that is getting in the way of me enjoying life. Let me tell you that time waits for no one just like my recent post Reaching the Half-Way Mark of the Year. We are now in the second half of the year.  If you are not careful to make time to enjoy life, we will be rounding out another year while you say, next year I will do it.  Well, there was a saying that tomorrow is not promised. Today is here and so you can and should make the most of it.

The summer is the best time to do just that.  There are scheduled vacation times, and the kids are home from school.  It also lends itself to a more relaxed time in the household in terms of tight schedules.  Now don’t get me wrong there is still things to be done.  There is just a little more flexibility.

Enjoying Life

Enjoying life does not need to be something you have to plan out or make special plans for.  It is an act of gratitude.  Simply put it, is seeing each and every day as a gift and an opportunity to make the most of the twenty-four hours that you have been given. You get to choose what you will and won’t spend your energy on.  You also get to choose who you will allow or give access to you.  That is something that you have control over.

While you have to work with or come in contact with people you would rather choose to not engage with: Try and make a conscious decision to not give away your power to them.  Do whatever task or work that you need to perform with them and then leave them and their negative/exhausting energy behind.

Begin by Practicing

Enjoying your life takes practice.  We live with a lot of distractions, and they are not all positive but if you make the effort to do your part in enjoying your life it can happen.  It begins with a step and just seeing things through a simple lens.

It means that you are able to enjoy simple everyday moments regardless of what is happening around you.  Your happiness is not based on your business, money or education.  It can be summed up by simply having a good day or having a conversation with an old friend.  That walk around the lake or listening to your favorite song can work wonders.

So, as you make the time to enjoy life, remember life is a journey and how you navigate this journey is up to you.  Until next time my readers remember to continue to …...live your dreams out loud

Reaching the Half-Way Mark of the Year

Posted on June 16, 2023August 4, 2023 by M Miller

Well, it is June already! We are reaching the half-way mark of the year.  Where did the time go?  It seems like we came into January with so much anticipation. We set goals marked for the path that we intend to follow for the year.

It is a great reminder that time does not stand still. We are moving and shifting constantly. That brings me to the subject of this blog post.  As we are reaching the half-way mark of the year, how are you feeling?  Are you happy, sad, tired, motivated or you just don’t know.

Reviewing Progress

Now is a great time to take inventory of your progress to date.  Is the year going in the direction that you would like it to go?  If yes, then you should feel happy about the progress you have made.  I tend to be an organized person so when I look at things, I break them down into categories.  For example, if you are a parent with school age children, you may want to look at the school year and schedule of the children, school, activities and chores. Examine how your weeks were spent.

Changing Plans

Then I would look at how things worked over the school year and begin to plan out the next year and how you can build from this year.  You can begin by discussing and setting up more effective, less stressful ways of bringing together school, chores and activities that work better for the changes ahead in the next school year.

If you are looking at how you personally navigated the first half of the year you may want to look at the personal goals that you set back in January and check off what you have accomplished thus far.  How to Set Personal Goals If you choose, you can update your personal goals to reflect any changes in your current situation.  Remember, change is not bad, it can actually be a good thing.

For those who have a business or side hustle, reaching the halfway mark of the year is a great time to access your business dynamics.

Are you seeing success in your current format?

Do you need to switch gears? Are you devoting enough time and attention to your business?

These are just a few questions you can ask yourself as you examine the year so far.

June is a great month to reflect on all of what I have mentioned in this blog post.  It is also a time to just slow down enough to be thankful for all you have navigated in six months and reflect and recharge for the the second half of the year.

Moving On

Be excited over the progress no matter how small.  It can be that you have learned to be more patient, you have been drinking more water or taking your vitamins on a regular basis.  There is always something that you can see as progress and as we are reaching the half-way mark of the year, take the time to pause and reflect on those things.

After you have taken the time to pause and reflect on the first half of the year, continue moving forward enjoying the journey.  Anticipating great things for the second half of the year and as you journey through my readers remember to continue….

Why the Need for Self-Care

Posted on June 3, 2023June 6, 2023 by M Miller

Why Self Care is Important

The need for self-care is important because it helps us withstand the pressures we encounter on a daily basis.  If we are not rendering care to ourselves, we are not able to manage our lives and businesses in the best possible way.  In essence at the heart of self-care is you and quite simply you deserve self-care.

What is Self-Care

What is self-care you might ask.? It is simply taking the time to make sure you are taking care of yourself in the best possible way.  It is taking the time to nurture yourself- mind, body and spirit.  You are ministering to the whole body.  Some may think that exercise alone is self-care but that is part of it.  That takes care of some of the physical components of self-care.

Stress is all around us and it can take a mental toll on us.  It is important to take the time to find healthy ways to manage stress.  For me that is where prayer comes in. It is a way to direct your thoughts and energy to a more peaceful and calming place.

There are also many soothing music and background noises that can serve to assist in ushering in calm from the stresses of the day.  I recently attended a yoga class and found some useful breathing techniques. I enjoyed them so much that I have begun to use some of them throughout the day.

The Personal Benefits of Self-Care

The personal benefit of self-care is that you become more in tune with your body.  You are able to be more fully present in your daily activities.  Your productivity increases because you have more energy, and this hopefully should impact your concentration.  This is great for those of us who operate our business because creativity is at the heart of focusing and growing our brand. The Value of a Positive Attitude

Setting up a Self-Care Routine

Like most routines it begins with the first step.  Think about what you currently are doing to render selfcare and then plan out the steps necessarily go about making selfcare a priority.  Then set a realistic goal and how you plan to go about engaging in self-care on a regular basis.

Take the time to revisit how well you are doing with managing your selfcare goals.

Don’t make it too heavy, try and keep it fun and reward yourself with special treats and pats on the back just as you would a friend.

The importance of self-care is to in my opinion is to be good to yourself.  Many times, we can be better to others than we are to ourselves.  This should not be the case. Make sure the love and care you extend to others you extend to yourself.  This is self-care and self-love in action which is at the heart of selfcare.  It is love of self.  This is not to be confused with being selfish or self-centered but a healthy respect and honor for yourself.

As you renew your commitment to self care, indulge in what you enjoy that adds happiness and relaxation to your life.  Connect with family and friends that make you feel special and valued and hopefully emerge with the added benefits of what real self-care can bring to your life.  Until next week my readers continue…. How Well are you Managing your Time

Posted on May 8, 2023May 7, 2023 by M Miller

Over the past few weeks, we have revisited our business and personal goals.  We have reset our wellness plan.  This brings me to our next step and that is organizing our time.  Are you managing your time or is your time managing you?

If you are like most people today your schedule is filled to the brim.  We are stretched thin on every side.  In order to be effective in most things there needs to be balance.  Without maintaining control of YOUR schedule, it becomes very hard to stay on track with your business, personal goals and your wellness plan.

How did your Schedule get so Full

That seems to be the starting point.  If we are the ones that are in control of our schedule then we have the power to say yes and NO to the things that are being added to our schedule.  The word seems to pride itself on staying busy and being burnt out and tired all the time.  That is not the most effective way to run your life and it has the opposite effect.  It leads to being less effective and productive.  Are You Managing Your Time

Ways to Better Manage Your Time

The first step to better managing your time, is to simply review your schedule. See what is necessary and then prioritize.  As working women and mothers we tend to take on too much as it is.  If you then add a business to your many roles, then that becomes very difficult to manage.

Set realistic expectations for yourself.  Realizing that some things may get done but not exactly the way you may want it to.  Being flexible is a great trait for being busy.  It creates a space for you to adjust your schedule without the unnecessary guilt.

Enlist Tools to Assist in Managing your Time

Help is a good thing and there are many ways  that we are able to simplify certain tasks.  You may want to do less running by order as much as you can online.  This is a great time saver and allows you to focus on other things.  Having a cleaning service come in once or twice a month can also free you up.  Planning out your meals for the next week and prepping in advance is also a great time saver.  A weekly/monthly planner is also a great tool for managing your schedule. You are able to fill it in and have a visual to know exactly where you are spending most of your time.  This also allows you to plan better.

Staying on Track

Once you have organized your schedule.  Remember the value of knowing when your cup is full and where it is overflowing the most.  Trim off as much as you can where you can.  Delegate help when needed and remember to use whatever tools you can to help you stay on track.  Remember that no is not a bad word and use it when necessary.  Just because you can do something does not mean you should.  Many times things are added to our schedule out of our devotion to help others.  It is your job to help yourself first and that is by prioritizing your time.

 The Benefits of Time Management

The benefits of managing your time is that you are able to reach and maintain the many goals you have set for yourself and your business.  You are able to keep up with the wellness journey you have committed to and the health benefits that come with that.  You are not tired, cranky and burnt out and you enjoy a more quality life. Those are some great benefits to managing your time.  Until next week my readers continue to ……live your dreams out loud

How to Reset your Wellness Plan

Posted on April 29, 2023April 29, 2023 by M Miller

As the warmer weather approaches, we begin to see more people out and about. They begin to walk or jog more.  The bicycles come out and we become more mindful of our weight.  It may have you wondering how to reset your wellness plan.

It is time to do a wellness check in.  Our mental and physical health is important because if we are not well everything else stops.

Resetting our wellness plan is a great way of checking in on our health habits.  If you are anything like me, you have placed it as a priority but somewhere along the way it begins to get lost in the busyness of our lives.  If that sounds like you then this blog post was written just for you!

Reset your Wellness Plan and Regain Control

If you have set some health goals and expectations but somewhere along the way your plan fell apart.  Gather your plan and restart.  If you are able to see where you got off track.  That would be a great starting point and then simply map out what you need to do to regain control. Are You Managing Your Time

When you feel that you are in control that gives you the power to push forward.

Once you have regained control, it is important to begin from where you are.  Set some daily and weekly goals for regaining control.  Below are some useful tips to assist you with how to regain control of your wellness plan.

  1. Recommit to monitoring your food intake
  2. Work into your schedule time for exercise
  3. Invest in some form of fitness tracking tools such as (smart watches or Fitbits) they are great tools for recording your movements
  4. Limit eating out if you can (you are not able to control the ingredients)
  5. Remember to take your vitamins and drink your water
  6. Do not underestimate the importance of sleep

The above steps can serve as a great foundation to build your healthy lifestyle plan from.  It is important in wellness to try and stay as consistent as possible.  I have found that those who go hard real fast, fall off real fast.  With that being said, by setting a plan that works for you and your schedule you are more likely to enjoy your wellness journey and stay committed to it.

The nice part about warmer weather is that it gets us out more.  It becomes easier to get that morning or evening walk in.  You can even enlist a friend to commit to walking at least 3-4 times a week with.  While we are talking about walking, keeping that water bottle nearby and drinking your water on a regular basis is also a great way to add to your wellness routine.

The Importance of Avoiding Stress as you Reset your Wellness Plan

The role that stress plays in your wellness routine is very important.  When we are stressed, we tend to not pay attention to our fitness and well-being. Our healthy habits fall off.  Stress can lead to overeating and weight gain.  Avoiding stress if you can is very important.  If you cannot avoid stress due to your current environment and lifestyle, try different ways to manage your stress so that you are able to stay committed to your wellness plan.

Remember to Rest

While all of the above-mentioned information is important, we cannot underestimate the need for and the importance of getting your proper rest.  Try and commit to getting at least seven hours of sleep each night.  When you are well rested, you are more productive.  The likelihood of you staying committed to the success of your wellness plan is increased.

Making it fun

The success of any plan hinges on enjoyment.  This includes your wellness journey.  Take advantage of the fruits and vegetables that are available this time of year.  Revamp your weekly recipes to include more vegetables and plan out as much as you can, what you are going to eat for the week.  If you plan to do well, you will.  Reset your wellness plan and try your best to stay committed. Enjoy your wellness journey and the fruits of your labor.  Until next week my readers continue to ……

It’s First Qtr. Goals Check in – How Did you make Out

Posted on April 16, 2023April 16, 2023 by M Miller

Its first quarter goals check in. How did you make out? As the new year approached, we set personal and business goals. It’s always a good practice to review those goals at the end of each quarter.  That time has arrived.  It is goal check in time. If you missed those blog posts, I have attached the links. How to Set Personal Goals How to Make Business Goals After each quarter, I make a practice to review the goals that I set.  When you review your goals each quarter it is easier to see how you are progressing.  A good practice is to compare what your original goal was and then see if you are on track.  If you are great.  If not don’t despair, all is not lost. See where you have gotten off track and then make the necessary corrections.

     Personal Goals Check in Questions

       How is it going?

Are you satisfied with how things are going so far??

       Are you being realistic?

Is there anything you would like to add or delete?

The above questions are just an example of what you can consider when examining your personal goals.  You know the goals you set and the expectations that you have for yourself and so your questions may vary.

Business Goals Check-in

Examining your business goals are slightly different.  Making sure your business succeeds is very important and so meeting and or exceeding your business goals have to be treated that way.  Review your objectives for your business.  Then examine whether you are on track for meeting your short- and long-term goals.

Below is a sample list of what you should consider when you check in on the progress of your business and how it is lining up with the goals that you have set.

Is your business on target for where you imagined at this time?

Are you seeing the growth you projected?

Is your income consistent or increasing?

Are you taking on too much at this time?

Do you need to adjust or change some of your goals?

Again, these questions serve as a guide for what to look for when you are examining your business goals.

Once, you have done a detailed breakdown for the first quarter on you personal and business goals.  You are better equipped to face the next quarter.  You know what to expect and are being realistic in how you approach your goals.  Any adjustments and changes that are needed you are able to head off before problems can arise.  It is called being proactive rather than being reactive.

The Status of your First Quarter Goals

That is why knowing the status of your first quarter goals is so important. If you are not sure how you are doing.  You won’t know unless you take the time out to really examine how you are doing.  It is a great tool to stay organized and successful.

There are those that may say it does not take all that.  I am doing great, and I don’t set goals or do a check in.  Well, that may work for them but for the rest of us, not so much.   Staying focused and on task requires us to prepare and have a pathway to our success.  That success is mapped out in the form of goal setting.

Now that you know the status of your goals for the first quarter, use it to inspire you to continue pushing forward.  May bigger and better things be on your horizon as you move through this year.  May your business thrive, and may you prosper in all that you do. That is my desire for you. Until next week my readers continue……...Living your Dreams out Loud

Now it’s Time for Spring Break

Posted on April 10, 2023April 10, 2023 by M Miller

The cherry blossoms are blooming. The kids have finished school. It is now time for spring break. The past week was marked by the celebration of three major holidays. Easter, Passover and Ramadan all came together at the same time. The holiday season provides the perfect opportunity to reflect on the many blessings that we have. It provides the time to reconnect and recommit to our relationship with God and how that relationship is essential to our very being.   It is a time that families come together and break bread.  Without that connection, we are reminded that life has very little meaning.  However you chose to spend your holiday, may you have walk away feeling more at peace and fulfilled.

The Start of Spring Break

This brings us to spring break.  The time when students are out of school and parents tend to take off from work to be home with the children.  For some families before school is out, they have made plans to head out early and avoid the traffic and airport lines.  Others are doing a staycation.  Both choices are good based on your budget and family situation.

The Goal of Spring Break

The goal of spring break should be to have fun, reconnect with your family and not completely wear yourself out. You should not need a vacation to recuperate from your spring break. We spend so much time running around and sticking to a schedule.  This break allows us to be schedule free and able to just breathe easier and slow down.  Try not to cram too much into the week.

The Staycation

For those who are doing a staycation, while you are at home try to rest and enjoy your surroundings.  You may have set aside some projects that you would like to do, while that is great, remember to limit the number of projects or you may feel like you are still at work.  It is also a great time to spruce up your home.  If you have not done so already, incorporate a bit of spring cleaning It’s Time for Spring Cleaning throughout the week.

Traveling

If you are away during this week.  Enjoy your stay to the fullest.  Take in the sights and sounds of your travel destination.  If you can limit the amount of time spent on your devices.  I am always entertained by those who spend so much time uploading each and every event that they are attending that it seems as if they are posting more than enjoying the moment.  If you are away, be in the moment of your vacay.  You cannot really enjoy your stay if every moment is a moment, you are posting online in real time.

Enjoying the Moment

Enjoy your spring break.  Remember that the time is limited and choose to do whatever whenever you want to.  It is the flexibility of having a choice that should be enjoyed most.  You don’t have to fit everything in, and you don’t have to overshare simply enjoy.  If you choose to sit on your deck with a cup of coffee and do nothing, I am happy for you.  We live in a time where it is almost expected that you have to rattle off a list of places and things that you did in order for people to be impressed.

How and where you spend your spring break is entirely up to you.  Only you know your budget and family situation.  Your only goal is to please yourself and your family.  It is not a competition between you and your coworker or neighbor.  Relax and enjoy spending time with your family.  Slow down the pace for the week.  Drop the schedules and take in the sights of spring as everything is blooming and growing all around us.  You have worked hard and now it is time for spring break.  Until next week my readers….

When Life Comes at you Hard

Posted on April 1, 2023April 2, 2023 by M Miller

This week I am going to discuss the topic when life comes at you hard.  There is a very successful influencer married couple that blew up the internet last week, when it was discovered that one of the marriage partners (allegedly) had an affair.  Everyone and anyone who had an opinion went live to speculate, instigate and voice their opinion. It made me think about how great being in the public can be when things are going well.  People are able to see the progress and cheer you on. When things take a turn, those same people can quickly turn on you.

Social Media

Relationships are very personal and with the internet and social media a lot is played out for the world to see.  We often can forget that these are real people with real lives. No one is perfect. It is hard enough to face a challenge in private. When it is public, it is even harder. I would imagine it becomes an even greater challenge.  Having said that, the higher you climb and the more you become someone that others look up to, you have to understand that you have an impact on those who hold you in high esteem.  You can cause others to stumble. They may even believe that there is no hope for them if you couldn’t do it.

Oversharing

I would like to add my personal opinion, some things are not meant to share with everybody or to make a joke of.  Meaning if you don’t set boundaries for what you will air on social media or what you will not participate in just for likes and shares. The door then becomes open to some very public and embarrassing moments.

Coping

When life comes at you hard and you are finding it hard to cope, the best thing that you can do for yourself, and your family is to take some time for yourself and heal from the trauma. Try not to listen to the voices and advice of those who may mean well but are not in your situation.  Also, it is important not to make quick decisions that you may regret later.  When you are emotional you may not be thinking clearly.

Please note that these are suggestions.  I am not a professional counselor and so with anything if you feel that you need to seek assistance by all means find a qualified professional that is able to provide what is needed during this time.

Next Steps

It is important to know that when life comes at you hard, you can and will get to the other side of the problem.  If you can surround yourself with positive people. Stay in prayer and rely on the word of God as your source of strength. Use the time to contemplate your next step. You may not be able to change the situation but you can control how you choose to navigate the situation. Navigating Transitions with Ease

When life comes at you hard and it will, remember that you can get through this with the help of family and friends.  If you are alone, seek assistance.  Take all the time that is needed to process and navigate your way through.

Sometimes the things we have been through places us in the best position to help someone else down the road, who is facing a similar situation.  If you are going through a situation now, it is my hope that you will emerge from the situation stronger, wiser and more resilient than ever, ready to continue …

It’s Time for Spring Cleaning

Posted on March 19, 2023March 18, 2023 by M Miller

The clocks have been adjusted ahead one hour and we now have more daylight.  This for me has always served as a reminder that spring is right around the corner.  It is the one time of year that you can feel energy in the atmosphere as everything that was dead is now giving way to life. It is the process of rebirth.  I find this time of year very exciting. Spring cleaning is the focus of this blog post.

Make Your List

With that being said, it is now time to get some spring cleaning done!   Where do we begin, you may ask, well like everything, we take note of what needs to be done.  We then break it down into manageable tasks and start to plan out how to tackle it.  If you are not sure how and when to start- then this blog post is written just for you (lol).

Organize What Needs to Be Done for Your Spring Cleaning

The first thing that you should do is begin to organize where you want to clean and how much you intend to get done.  If you are up to date on keeping your home clean, your spring cleaning may be different from someone who has neglected to do the necessary cleaning on a regular basis.  In this case the task will be different, more involved and time consuming.

After you have assessed what areas of your home you would like to focus on, you then need to take inventory of the cleaning supplies you will need.  If you have great, if not you may need to head out to the store and shop for your supplies.  There are so many now that are non-toxic and get the job done while leaving your place looking and smelling fresh.

Breaking Down Your Spring-Cleaning Tasks

You now know which areas you will focus your energy into cleaning.  You also have your cleaning supplies. Now you are ready to schedule your time for cleaning.  This can be done by breaking down each area into manageable bits of time so that you are not exhausted. This will allow you to be able to give it your best.  This is not a solo task, enlist your troops (kids, spouse, etc.)

The list below serves as a suggestion of areas to target for your spring cleaning.

Sliding glass doors and windows

Wipe and polish baseboards and cabinets.

Dust ceiling fan and light fixtures

Change or clean blinds.

Remove all unnecessary clutter.

Donate clothes that you no longer use.

You have carefully made your list, gotten your supplies together and have the areas that you choose to focus on for your spring cleaning.  The next step is to plan out your cleaning schedule so that you are still able to meet your many other daily tasks.  If you have done this well, then you will find that you have allotted for cleaning over a period of time, and it did not overwhelm you or tire you out.  The goal is to stay on top of cleaning most of the year so that seasonal cleaning is not a dreaded burden.

Adding Final Touches to your Spring Cleaning

Once you are done with the overall spring cleaning and your home is feeling like spring, you can then add those final touches.  This can include updating throw pillows in the living room/family room.  Another special touch would be to update your bedroom comforter sets and then adding a touch of greenery to your indoor space is always a welcome addition.  There are so many assortments of plants that you can add to your home.

Spring cleaning can serve as a symbolic way to welcome in a new season.  One of new growth and anticipation.  As you approach this new season, you may find my blog post Navigating Transitions with Ease quite useful. So, enjoy cleaning out your space and breathing in a more organized fresh surrounding.  Until next week my readers……

Fundamentals of Budgeting 101

Posted on March 9, 2023March 11, 2023 by M Miller

We have actually reached the first quarter of the year (whew that flew by).  Hopefully everyone’s year is off to a good start.  It is always a good idea to do a financial check in.  This check in serves to make sure that you are sticking to your budget.  If you don’t have one, then you have come to the right place.  The focus of this blog post is to outline some basic budgeting essentials.

The first thing you will need to do is decide what method you will use to organize and track your finances.  This can be a workbook, an excel spreadsheet or even a simple notebook.  There are many choices available.  Choose whatever method works for you and is easy to stay committed to.

Entrepreneurs

For those who are Entrepreneurs you will need to make sure to separate business from personal expenses.  If you are not really good with spreadsheets, then you may want to invest in software such as QuickBooks. Taking this extra step would allow you to run your business more efficiently and not have to scramble at the end of the year to get everything together for tax purposes.

Once you have chosen your tracking tool you then need to set up a realistic budget.  This budget should take into account your total expenses and income.  It is always very important to save.  I can not overestimate the importance of allowing for saving in your budget.  All too many times people reward themselves by spending more and this overindulgence leads to that dreaded word,  Yes you guessed it DEBT.  We are not trying to do that.  The less you owe the freer you are to enjoy your life.

We now have our tracking system in place.  We’ve accounted for our expenses and income and also set aside an amount for savings.  This is a great start for those who are new to budgeting.  This process can also be used for Entrepreneurs.  Again, make sure to keep personal funds separate from business funds.  If you have not already done so, you should have a business bank account to deposit and release funds from.  The more organized you are the better it is when it comes to staying on track with your budget.

Money Management

We will revisit the topic of money management throughout the year to see how well you are doing with your budget.  Just like the goal setting How to Set Personal Goals How to Make Business Goals that we did earlier this year, it is not perfect.  There will be times that you have splurged too much or forget to account for an entry in your tracking tool.  Move forward anyway and keep working the system that you put in place.

The goal of any budget is not to punish you but to discipline you to be more successful at managing your money.  We all know people who have great jobs but have nothing to show for it because they spend, spend…and spend.  We also know people who know how to make a dollar stretch and live on less.  This is not a coincidence.  It takes practice, determination and discipline.
